BuzzIndex uses Computer Vision and Machine Learning algorithms, developed in partnership with MIT, to detect facial expressions and head gestures obtained from webcams or mobile cameras. It assesses, analyses and interprets the user’s reactions to content to detect the full range of emotions from joy, discomfort and indifference to rapt engagement. BuzzIndex is embedded in Ebuzzing Social’s player, so brands can implement this technology with any web-connected and webcam enabled audience, without the need for captive test-subjects or a research lab.

With over a third of the SOV we predict that Ang Lee will sneak the award.

Best Actress this year features the oldest ever nominee (Emmanuelle Riva at 85) and the youngest (Quvenzhané Wallis who was just 6 when she filmed Beasts of the Southern Wild). Jennifer Lawrence is the overall favourite in this category, with over 43% of the share of voice and winner at the Golden Globes, we think she will emerge victorious on Sunday night.

Once again the tech sector maintains the top spot, publishing the most videos in December, although their share drops from 24% to 19%. Gaming falls the most – in November it was in second place, producing 17% of all videos published but this drops to just 6% in December. This was probably due to most brands releasing campaigns in November to be ready for the early Christmas shoppers. Automotive climbs from 8th to 3rd place but only increases its share of video releases by 6%.

The results for top sector based on Facebook interaction rate demonstrates the problem of having a lot of content but not a lot of interaction. The only sector which manages to encourage interaction whilst producing a high volume of video content is Automotive which has a 5.5% Facebook interaction rate.

The top sectors based on share of views is where we see the majority of change. The technology sector is the only one to maintain its position in third place, but drops from 12% to 9%. The travel sector shows the biggest change, in November Travel did not even feature as a top sector, one month later it takes 46% of share of views. This is largely due to the hugely successful campaign run by Turkish Airlines.

Turkish Airlines’ advertisement featuring Lionel Messi and Kobe Bryant has racked up over 100 million views and 1.1 million Facebook likes since its release in December.

The ad catapulted Turkish Airlines into first place for top brands based on share of total views, claiming 44% and second place for top brands based on share of Facebook interactions. Turkish Airlines nailed the content for this advertisement, the little boy’s struggle to decide which of his heroes he should talk to (finally concluded by the ultimate distraction, ice cream) clearly struck a chord for millions of people.

Another brand that does well in both these categories is Time Warner. Their performance coincides with the release of the first Hobbit film, an unexpected journey.

Interestingly neither Turkish Airlines nor Times Warner feature in top brands based on Facebook interaction rate. Instead Snickers takes the top spot with 88.4% followed by Chanel with 53.9%.

Neither brand features on top brand by share of views and only just make it onto top brands by share of Facebook interactions, with Snickers claiming 1% and Chanel 2%. This suggests that although they do not have as many people viewing their videos they have created more engaging content which leads much more interaction.

The top publishing sector was yet again Technology producing 24% of all published online videos. Interestingly the Luxury sector only produced 3% of total videos published but achieved 19% of November’s total share of views, second highest after Gaming (22%).

Luxury also performed well in Facebook interactions, again coming second with 20% behind the Drinks category (28%). With regards to Facebook interaction rate Luxury scored 2.2%, just above November’s average (2.1%). The sector’s performance was probably due to video campaigns run by Louis Vuitton, Chanel and Cartier which placed highly with regards to share of total views, Facebook interactions and Facebook interaction rate.

‘Drinks’ was another sector that generally performed well in November. It produced 15% of all published branded videos, achieving 10% of the total share of views, 27% of Facebook interactions and a 5.8% Facebook interaction rate, well above average. Strong campaigns run by Red Bull largely contributed to the sector, the brand had 9% of total views and 27% of total Facebook interactions. Other drinks brands to contribute were Monster and Coca-Cola with interaction rates of 12.7% and 11.8%.

Spotlight on Christmas:

Christmas ads featured within November’s videos with John Lewis standing out. ‘The Journey’ is in the top three across all metrics with 45% of share of views, 59% of all Facebook interactions and a Facebook interaction rate of 11.8%. Cartier’s ‘Winter Tale’ performed well, placing second in all metrics. A comeback for Coca-Cola’s ‘old’ advert ‘Holidays are coming’ which received 1% of share of views, 1.8% of Facebook interactions and the highest interaction rate of 14.3%, performing better than the ‘new’ advert ‘Together we make the magic happen’ which received 1%, 1.3% and 9.5% across these metrics.

European Overview:

60.7% of all publications were generated from the UK, indicating high public interest, while the Italians were the least involved, producing only 0.6% of the total publications. Spain, France and Germany followed the UK with 17.1%, 13.9% and 7.7% of all publications generated.

The number of publications spiked on the 27th September, this was probably due to journalists attending the press day which was held two days before the event was open to the general public.

Many blogs that posted about the event were key influencers, 350 featured in the top 50 of their corresponding categories on the Ebuzzing labs.

UK Focus:

Overall the media coverage in the UK amounted to a media equivalent of £500,000. Here’s how the money was ‘spent’

Twitter

Show-goers were tweeting away and Twitter represents 90% of total publications. This is unsurprising as it includes all posts published in English. Forums come in second with 6.2% and blogs third with 2.9%.

Wired, Forbes, FrencHMonTonA, tsairox and funkmaster were the top 5 most influential Twitter accounts, in total 13,606 authors published to 38 million followers.

Blogs:

No prizes for guessing which blog category posted about the Paris Motorshow the most often. After automotive, other categories included online marketing, environment, design and fashion. The blog which published the most stories about the show was “CarandDriver” which posted over 50 articles about the event.

Brand Comparison:

No unusual brands here – BMW, McLaren and Audi are the three most talked about brands, together featuring in 19.5% of all publications. BMW comes first having featured in almost 7% of all publications referring to the Paris Motor Show.

Cars and Social Media: A Study by Ebuzzing

Here at Ebuzzing we’ve made sense of the information and have produced an analysis of the jump’s media impact between the 9th and 16th of October across the UK, Germany, France, Italy and Spain.

The Facts:

Over the week there were 134,157 publications made about the highest and fastest ever sky dive. 51% of these mentioned the jump’s sponsor Red Bull.

We then divided these publications into three groups – Blogs, Tweets and Media Articles.

• Out of the total publications 2,359 were blogs of which 44% mentioned Red Bull. Seventy-three of these blogs came from the UK and generated 179 UK blog posts, six of which came from very influential authors.

• Tweets made up 130,000 of the publications, 51% of them referring to Red Bull. In the UK there were 40,298 authors who wrote 46,317 tweets, 1,544 tweeted by very influential authors. These tweets reached 83,920,562 followers.

• Media articles were the least numerous format with 1,798 articles published across the five countries analysed. In the UK 48 sources produced 220 articles.

Timeline for Red Bull publications:

• Red Bull first announces the project on Twitter in January 2010 using #RedBullStratos and tweets on average twice a week.

• May 2010 Red Bull launches the Red Bull Stratos Facebook page.

• October they announce the cancellation of the project on Twitter because of a lawsuit.

• Silence until February 2012 when a tweet announces the recommencement of the Stratos project. The jump is then tweeted once per day on average.

• In September Red Bull resumes its Facebook postings.

• Between the 1st – 16th October the attempt is tweeted about several times per day.

• 14th October Red Bull tweets about the launch 67 times.

The Red Bull Stratos page had 252,000 followers with Red Bull’s main page attracting even more with 785,000. On Youtube the jump received 780,000 followers and 416 million views of the Red Bull channel. Red Bull’s fan page on Facebook also got a huge 32 million likes.

The buzz for the jump came in two waves, one coming on the day the jump was cancelled due to poor weather conditions and another on the day of the successful launch.

Here at Ebuzzing we have analysed over 925,000 tweets, 159,000 forum posts, 75,000 articles and 6,600 blog posts through our social monitoring tool, Ebuzzing Labs. We calculated the media value of this activity which amounted to over £10 million. Twitter has seen the most activity with over 416,000 authors tweeting about the elections since July, an equivalent of £9 million.

Over all social platforms, Barack Obama is leading the buzz race with a 57% share of voice over his rival, Mitt Romney. This is partly due to the Democrat’s aggressive use of social media; @BarackObama has over 21 million election followers, 31 million Facebook likes, and has featured in 18,742 posts. In comparison, @MittRomney only has 1.68 million followers and 12 million Facebook likes.

Across Twitter, Blogs, Forums and Media Articles the number of publications has risen dramatically in line with the three presidential debates on the 3rd,16th and 22nd of October. The total number of publications peaked on the 22ndof October with 24,790 mentions, of which 21,791 were published from Twitter. The first and third debate received more attention, possibly because Romney and Obama each won by a convincing margin, while the Democrat only narrowly won the second.

Blogs from a wide range of categories, from lifestyle and culture, to law, economy and technology, have been talking about the US elections; the most active blog in the UK has published 376 articles on the subject. Reuters, The Telegraph and The Guardian have been the most active media channels within Europe, publishing 1,011 articles between them.

With voting now well underway, Ebuzzing predicts Obama’s strong hold within social media and his majority stake in online buzz around the elections will aid the incumbent president to reign once more.

All in all, it is safe to say that Obama won the social media campaign by an overwhelming margin, attracting almost three times more likes than his rival. Interestingly the Romney campaign generated a higher engagement rate, despite Obama’s campaign being so much more successful.

Users don’t like online advertising – Fiction

Econsultancy’s UK Internet Advertising Statistics Compendium has proved that users do engage with online advertising and consider it a vital part of the internet. 61% of adult users believe the internet would disappear without online advertising and 31% say they have made a purchase as a direct result of an online ad. Young users are the most engaged with 40% claiming to have bought a product or service because of an online advert and 68% finding online advertising helpful.

Shortform online video ads just as effective as TV – Fact

Comscore’s Surviving the upfronts in a cross media world proved that shortform online video ads are just as effective as their television counterpart. ComScore used their Share of Choice metric (which gauges consumer preference for a brand among its competitors), to compare 30 different advertisements that were tested in both online video and traditional TV formats. They found that the lift in Share of Choice for both TV advertisements and online video was 0.86. This correlates to roughly an 8% lift in sales for both formats, proving that online video ads are just as effective as traditional television advertising.

Online Video is a fad – Fiction

In 2011 the average Brit watched 19 hours of video per month, 176 videos in total. ComScore’s report suggests that only 1.5% of online video is made up of advertising, whereas TV is 25% adverts. This suggests there is massive room for growth in online video advertising and that the upward online trend is set to continue. ComScore is not alone, Nielsen’s Global Advertising Report also agrees that online video advertising is here to stay and encourages advertisers to ‘refine marketing plans so that they reflect this new video-viewing behavior’.

So how did Technology Blogged start?

I have personally always loved technology and the very latest gadgets. That, combined with my avid interest in business from an early age, spurred me on to launch a number of money making blogs from the age of 15 (I am now 22). I launched Technology Blogged in 2009 not for money or internet fame; I created it as a hobby and to write about a topic which genuinely interested myself.

What do you think are the key ingredients of a technology blog?

Solid, well-written and consistent content which is always sourced and accurate. I feel that any blogger worth their salt should always provide sources for their articles, no matter how menial the matter may be. It backs up credibility, which for me is one of the biggest elements to any blogs success. To be credible means to have trust and influence amongst your audience. If you have that power, the blogosphere is your oyster.

How do you feel about monetising your blog? Do you think the adverts are useful for your audience?

I have always been extremely picky about monetising my websites, to the point where in the past I have turned down fairly large contracts. I am all about quality and have been ever since I started blogging. I take a pro-active approach to maintaining my websites not motivated by finance and the money I can make, but motivated by building Technology Blogged and my others websites into even better resources. There are far too many blogs out there who sell text links by the bucket load; I aim to ensure Technology Blogged does not become like these. This is one of the reasons I really like Ebuzzing: High quality advertisers and leading UK brands are on the Ebuzzing network and it is these advertisers, and the media formats you require for them, that I am most interested in for monetisation.

How have social networks influenced your blog?

That is a great question, however let me curl away from the original question slightly; social media has changed the way I go about the promotion of all content on my websites. Google+, Pinterest, Twitter, Facebook; all of these platforms are key to a blogs success unless launched by a huge company. For the little guys out there (myself included), social media is a fantastic chest of possibilities which just needs to be opened the right way to reveal the treasure.

What’s the most challenging thing about writing a blog?

That’s an easy one – for me personally it is finding the time to write hundreds of posts per month, manage other professional commitments and also juggle family life as well. It sounds like overkill but sometimes I wake up at 6 in the morning and work until 3 at night. I’m used to it, though.

The big aim you should have for your blog is to make it a success. What you deem as a success however is up to you.
